Blankets & Throws

Imagine sitting by a fire curled up in your favorite throw or burrowed in your favorite blanket. Both blankets and throws offer an oversized option perfect for a cozy night in with your favorite movie. There are a variety of color and pattern options perfect for your taste, or you can keep it clean and simple with a white blanket.

While the differences between a throw and a blanket may be subtle, they are certainly there. And the truth is, when it comes down to choosing between the two, there is no wrong choice. However, it is beneficial to know some of the differences to help you decide which option is best for you and your needs.

What's the Difference Between a Blanket and a Throw?

Size

Blankets are a light medium-weight bedding option that is usually larger than throws. Not only are they sized to fit a bed but they're perfect for providing versatile and adjustable warmth throughout the year. Blankets are generally larger than a bed mattress and come in different sizes:

Twin

66" x 90"

Full

90" x 90"

Queen

90" x 90"

King

108" x 90"

A throw, on the other hand, is typically smaller than a blanket (about 50” x 60”).

Function

The main function of blankets is to provide warmth but they also create a layered top bed option. Alternatively, the primary purpose of a throw blanket is decoration. Each style of throws brings a new look to bedding, especially when matched with other bedroom accessories such as comforters and pillow shams.

Location

Blankets are usually found in bedrooms for practical use like keeping warm. Unlike personal blankets, throws are typically draped over sofas, chairs, benches, and stools rather than a bed. Due to their intricate designs, throws are an inexpensive way to transform any room's charm and aesthetic appeal. There are many additional areas that they can be placed in, but these are the most common.

Material

Generally speaking, bed blankets are made from one large piece of fabric such as wool, flannel, or cotton. One of the more popular options for added warmth is cotton blankets. Cotton blankets provide year-round warmth and are great for layering. Additionally, the edges may be bound with a strip of tightly-woven fabric. Decorative throws, however, may be hand-woven from common materials such as cotton or made from special fabrics like suede to reflect their aesthetic qualities. When conducting your search, you'll want to pick a throw with the right feel and look that you'll want to constantly wrap yourself in.

Design

Both blankets and throws feature heated, reversible, or temperature-regulating options to give you the convenience and comfort you need. However, when it comes to design, one of the easiest ways to tell the difference between the two is the edges. Blankets are always hemmed while throws come with some type of fringe. Because throws are often used as a decorative accent, they consist of beautiful patterns and intricate designs that are displayed in various rooms. Personal blankets, on the other hand, may not be as decorative or attractive.
