How & When to Wear Cufflinks

Traditionally, cufflinks are thought of as a formalwear essential. However, they can be pretty worn as part of a wardrobe to pretty much any occasion, as long as the shirt worn can accommodate the accessories.

Speaking of which, shirts must offer the proper cuff design to support cufflinks. The type of cuff generally associated with cufflinks is French cuffs. French cuffs have two holes on either side of the opening, which should line up one atop the other when you fold the cuff back.

Cufflinks are then inserted into the openings on the cuffs, and, depending on the type of cufflink you’ve choses, secured in place via a post or hinge. Cufflinks come in various styles, with several types of posts that keep them securely in place.

Whale back cufflinks have a flat head, a straight post, and a “whale tail” that flips completely flat against the post. The tail is what secures the cufflinks into place and keeps them from falling out.

Bullet back cufflinks are similar to whale tail cufflinks, but the post is a hollow frame. The closing mechanism is a cylinder of metal that sits inside the frame. To lock the links in place, the cylinder is flipped out, turning the frame into the post that secures the links in the buttonhole.

Stud or button cufflinks have no hinge mechanism or moving parts. Instead, they have a large decorative head, a straight post, and a smaller, interior backing. The smaller backing is put through the buttonhole, and then straightened out to set it in place.

Cufflinks can also come in many different materials, including top notch and durable options like carbon fiber, stainless steel, titanium, and more.

As far as when to wear cufflinks, there’s no shortage of situations where you can bring them out and show them off. Most men will wear cufflinks in business and formal social settings, as part of an outfit that includes a dress shirt and a suit. But cufflinks can find their way into less formal outfits, too. Any shirt with the appropriate cuffs can support cufflinks, so go ahead and wear them as you please!
