Kohl's has all the baby accessories and gear you need to make your little one safe and comfortable.
What to Look for in High Chairs
High chairs come in a variety of styles with various features, but safety and comfort come to the forefront when it comes to finding quality high chairs. Opt for one that's easy to clean and designed with a broad, stable base to help prevent tipping. Your child will likely use a high chair until age 2 or 3, so it will need to be durable enough to withstand several years of daily use. Additional factors to look out for when buying a high chair include:
- Versatility: Some styles convert to a booster seat or kid-sized chair to use when your child is older.
- Adjustability: You'll need a chair with adjustable height that can move with your little one's growth.
- Comfort: Padded seats are softer for your baby's bottom and a footrest is a nice feature for older babies.
- Wheels: Not only do these make it easier to move the chair but locking them enhances the safety of the chair.
Reclining High Chairs vs. Upright High Chairs
Once you're starting them on solid foods and your baby can sit up by themselves, a high chair makes it easy for you to supervise meals. If you're still deciding whether or not it's time to make the transition, here are two different types of high chairs to consider:
Reclining High Chairs
Can be used when babies are as early as a few weeks old. This style is not meant for feeding infants solid food, it's meant more for just hanging out or bottle feeding.
Upright High Chairs
If your kiddo is sitting up well, this style is ideal when you're ready to start with the upright position.
When Can Your Baby Sit Up in a High Chair?
The first thing to note is that every baby is different. This means that the age at which one child might make the transition does not mean that it's the right time for another. However, the typical timeframe that parents can expect their kiddo to be ready is around 4 to 6 months old. High chair manufacturers generally have an age recommendation for each chair, but waiting until around 6 months old is a good starting point. First, their head and neck should be stable without having to be propped up. Secondly, their shoulders should be straight with their arms moving about on their own to freely grab food. Once your kiddo is able to sit up well with some support for control and stability, then your baby will be ready for a high chair. But if their head is falling forward or their shoulders are slouching to the side, then they're not quite ready.
