When it comes to decorating your living space, find the information and inspiration needed to get you started right here.

Types of Curtains for a Living Room

Sheer curtains are often overlooked as a window treatment, but they shouldn't be. After all, they're a rather versatile and highly functional option. They're an essential finishing touch that can make a room feel fully decorated and inviting. Sheer drapes and curtains transform any room into a lovely living area that's sure to please your friends and family. Not only are sheer drapes lightweight, but practical and easy to hang as well. Light filtering curtains, on the other hand, provide privacy to your dining room or living room, while still giving you the light you need.

You won't have to worry about constantly turning on your lighting fixtures as the curtains will keep the room lit with natural lighting.

Finally, lined curtains have a longer life than unlined curtains because the lining protects the fabric from sunlight. They typically consist of an uncoated fabric at the front that provides the look and feel of a curtain. In addition, it has a separate coated fabric attached at the rear to provide insulation. This style allows natural light to enter the room while still maintaining privacy within the home.

How to Measure Your Window

To ensure accuracy, measure the width of the window in three places: the top, the middle, and the bottom. For outside mounts like curtains, consider how far you want the window treatment to extend. In addition to the width, determine how much overlap you want on each side. One important tip to keep in mind is that hardware generally adds two and a half inches to each side of the window.

After measuring the width, it's time to measure the height of the window. When hanging curtains, measure from either the bottom of the window or directly below it to the top of the window. Once you find the right length, mark how high you want your curtains to hang and round up both measurements to the nearest standard panel size.

Living Room Curtain Top Treatments

The top treatment is how a curtain fastens to the rod(s) above your window. Opt for a top treatment that suits the formality of your space and the hardware that you select. Common top treatment options include:

Loops of fabric on the backs of the panels perfect for providing a clean, tailored appearance.

Metal openings at the top of each panel that create a crisp and contemporary style.

Rod pocket

A built-in pocket at the top of each panel that slips onto the rod for a casual, gathered look.

Single loops of fabric at the top of each panel that works best for casual, relaxed rooms.
