Reclaiming Lunch with the Lunch Box

What's the thing that humanizes all the hangry people of the world? Lunch time. From the business man to the school kid, lunch is a time to kick back, take a deep breath, and sink into a delicious midday meal. Depending on the contents you'll need a few things to keep it fresh and safe. The first thing is getting a great lunch box.

You thought they were just for kids? As much as a lunch from the cafeteria has been your go to for awhile, you need to remember how good a home cooked meal can feel. Remember that feeling as a kid when you would bite into that sandwich or leftovers? The sheer joy of stabbing a straw into your juicebox? Reclaim your lunch. Get that lunchbox back in your life, and relive the serendipity of lunch from home.

Choosing your lunch box

As an adult, you may feel like you can't have something fun. Listen, nobody is going to judge you if you pick up a kid's lunch box, if it represents your particular fandom. With that said, you're definitely not getting your adult sized portions stuffed into that. Instead, consider an adult sized lunch box, and deck it out with some fun stickers. However, if you are shopping for your child, you've come to the right place.

When it comes to shopping your adult sized lunchbox, you've got all the usual brands you'd usually consider and more! If you're athletically inclined you can rep your favorite brands like Nike, Under Armour, and adidas. What you're getting with modern lunch boxes is the ability to store a few different containers, and the ability to keep your food hot or cold. Some lunch boxes are insulated, so it's easy to temperature regulate. Others will have thinner walls, so be sure to leave room for an ice pack if you need to keep your food at safe temperatures.

Lunch accessories

Ice pack

Sometimes you'll need a little something more to make lunch the best it can be, if you're packing from home. Some lunch boxes may have an ice pack built in, but they often don't. Keeping that in mind, you'll want to make sure that your food is staying at safe temperatures. Break out of the two hour safety limit with an ice pack.

Food jars

If a lunch box doesn't work for what you're bringing (such as soup), try an insulated food jar. These are great for keeping your soups and liquids air tight and fresh for lunch time. Some are a single container, while others are sets that come with an insulated bag, so you can bring a multi dish lunch if need be.

Storage containers

Sometimes, specialty containers aren't something you need, so don't hesitate to pick up a great set of microwavable storage containers. These are usable for both lunch and standard dinner prep and leftover situations. They're reliably easy to clean most days, and can stand up to a lot of wear and tear. With these containers being all purpose, they're definitely great for everyday use.

Travel mugs and single-serve coffee makers

To round out lunch, you always need a pick me up. Grabbing coffee from the cafe can really add up, so why not splurge on a high quality travel mug? Travel mugs will keep your coffee piping hot and fresh. These are great for anybody who needs to just grab-and-go on work mornings, or if you're taking a long trip and don't have time to drink at home.

If taking the time to measure out your tablespoons of coffee grounds for your drip coffee maker, consider adding a single-serve coffee maker to the mix. These are machines that often require you to just pop the coffee mug or travel container into place, inserting your coffee of choice, and letting it do its thing. This is crazy handy if you're trying to work around a spouse and several children. Best of all, it'll make the coffee the same way every time!
