Sheer Drapes & Curtains

When it comes to window treatments, it's not only a matter of color and fabric but length and lining as well. Sheer drapes are often overlooked as a window treatment, but they shouldn't be. After all, they're a rather versatile and highly functional option. They're an essential finishing touch that can make a room feel fully decorated and inviting. With so many decisions, it's easy to feel overwhelmed as you conduct your room makeover. If you're still undecided on this room accessory, we're here to give you the lowdown on sheer drapes and curtains.

What are Sheer Drapes?

Sheer drapes and curtains from Kohl's transform any room into a lovely living area that's sure to please your friends and family. Not only are sheer drapes lightweight, but practical and easy to hang as well. However, this type of curtain generally allows the most light through the fabric, which means it offers the least privacy. Therefore, you may want to pair them with blackout curtains to create a more formal look, as well as additional privacy after dark.

What Rooms are Sheers Best in?

Like most curtains, sheer drapes can be placed in a variety of rooms depending on your needs. Sheers diffuse light while still retaining outward visibility. Therefore, they're the perfect addition to bedrooms and living spaces. They also work extremely well in rooms with lots of patterns by providing soft, visual relief. Want a polished look with chic appeal? Try layering sheers under a solid drape to provide light filtering options.

How to Measure Your Window

To ensure accuracy, measure the width of the window in three places: the top, the middle, and the bottom. For outside mounts like curtains, consider how far you want the window treatment to extend. In addition to the width, determine how much overlap of curtains you want on each side. One important tip to keep in mind is that hardware generally adds two and a half inches to each side of the window.

After measuring the width, it's time to measure the height of the window. For full-length curtains, measure from the floor to the top of the window. To make your room appear taller, add an extra four to six inches to the top of the window. Once you find the right length, mark how high you want your curtains to hang and round up both measurements to the nearest standard panel size.

Sheer Drapes Top Treatments

The top treatment is how a curtain fastens to the rod(s) above your window. Opt for a top treatment that suits the formality of your space and the hardware that you select. Common top treatment options include:

Grommet Curtains

Metal openings at the top of each panel that create a crisp and contemporary style.

Tab-top Curtains

Single loops of fabric at the top of each panel that works best for casual, relaxed rooms.

Rod Pocket

A built-in pocket at the top of each panel that slips onto the rod for a casual, gathered look.

Back Tab Curtains

Loops of fabric on the backs of the panels perfect for providing a clean, tailored appearance.
