A Guide to Shower Curtain Rods
Most people think that shower curtains only serve two purposes: providing privacy and preventing water from spraying outside the shower area. While that may be true, shower curtains and accessories are also a quick and easy way to brighten up your bathroom. And although this accessory may not be the star of your bath decor, it's one of the first things you and your guests will notice. Shower curtains are essential, but you can’t hang them without a shower curtain rod. It’s important to carefully consider which rod is best for you. Otherwise, buying the wrong size or shape won’t fit your shower - and no one wants that.
So before you pick out the first curtain rod that you see, here are a few things to consider first.
Where to Hang Your Shower Rod
Generally speaking, shower curtains should hang where the bottom hem is at least 1 to 2 inches away from the bathroom floor. Curtains that are overly long can become the ideal environment for mold and mildew. Additionally, long curtains can become a tripping hazard that will get in the way while you clean. If you're deciding on what type of shower rod to get, here are a few popular styles to consider:
Straight Shower Rods
Curved Shower Rods
Adjustable Shower Tension Rods
L-shaped Corner Shower Curtain Rods
How to Hang Shower Curtain Rods
In addition to being functional and decorative, shower curtain rails are an integral part of bathrooms. One thing to note is that one size rod won’t fit every bathroom. Curtain rods come in various styles, so installation can vary depending on which type you have. However, by using simple household tools like measuring tape, a screwdriver, pencil, and a stud finder, you’ll have your curtain rod up in no time. Here’s how it’s generally done:
- Measure & Mark - Most standard shower curtains measure 72” long by 72” wide. You’ll want to begin by measuring the width of your shower, or the distance between the shower walls and making a mark.
- Hang the Curtain Rod - Using the marks as a guide, you can hang the rods. If you’re hanging screw-mounted rods, place the mounting brackets at equal distances from the tub base on either side of the shower walls. If you’re hanging tension rods, lift the rod until both sides cover the marks that you made on the walls.
- Add the Curtain Rings - Line up the holes at the top of the curtain and liner, then loop one shower ring through each hole.
- Hang the Liner & Curtain - Carefully raise the curtain and liner to slip each shower ring over the rod and clasp them into place.
