Features of Sleeping Bags

Sleeping bags offer a wide range of features and functions that keep you comfortable during your camping trip. Before you head to your campsite, make sure you check weather reports to know what conditions you’ll be facing.

Here are several main factors to look for when choosing a sleeping bag:

  • The temperature rating describes the coldest comfortable temperature your sleeping bag can handle. Usually, there is a minimum and a maximum degree for which the sleeping bag is recommended.
  • Insulation is measured by the fill weight in ounces. The higher the number, the warmer and more insulated your bag will be. Sleeping bags can be filled with a variety of materials, including synthetic insulation, which is an affordable option, dries fast, and is non-allergenic. Down insulation is another fill option, and is lightweight, packs down for easy transportation, and is extremely durable.
  • The length of the sleeping bag is important to know, as it will let you know how much coverage it will offer, based on your height. Look for information about the height of a person that will comfortably fit within the sleeping bag to ensure you’re completely covered in warmth.
  • The shape of the bag will most often be rectangular or mummy style. Rectangular bags are roomier, but can also add bulk to your travels. Mummy bags are tapered at the feet and often include a hood for more insulation.

If you want to sleep a bit off the ground, there are a couple options to consider.

Air mattresses create a comfortable and cushioned sleeping place that’s elevated off the ground. These are ideal for extended campground stays, but can be bulky to carry and require an air pump for inflation.

Sleeping bag pads are another option, and can be used with or without an air mattress to stay separated from the uneven terrain. These items are usually less bulky than an air mattress, while providing additional cushioning and warmth to your sleeping space.

Sleeping Bag Storage & Care

Caring for your sleeping bag will ensure it lasts for a long time, giving you the protection and warmth required for outdoor activities. Typically, all you’ll need to do to keep your sleeping bag looking great and in tip-top shape is an occasional spot cleaning using non-detergent soap, water, and a toothbrush! Just work on areas that need attention, keeping the fill away from the area to ensure it stays dry.

You can also fully wash a sleeping bag if it gets really dirty. Be sure to follow manufacturer instructions for care to ensure the bag retains its warmth and insulation properties.

Storing your sleeping bag properly is another important step in keeping your bag at peak performance. When not in use, store your sleeping bag in a climate-controlled location, as things like heat and humidity can affect the effectiveness of a sleeping bag. You might also consider storing your sleeping bag in a breathable sack or pillowcase, as doing so will contain the bag, allow for ample air circulation, all while allowing the fill to remain uncompressed.
