Difference Between Water-Resistant Watches & Waterproof Watches

Water can be a watch's biggest enemy. However, there are some styles that can endure time in the water. You’ve likely heard the terms “water-resistant” and “waterproof” used interchangeably. However, they don’t mean the same thing. Read on to learn more about the differences between these timepieces!

Water-Resistant Watches

The truth is that no watch is completely waterproof. There is always a limit to how much water pressure a watch can handle. These types of watches can only withstand contact with water for a certain amount of time or under certain conditions. In most cases, water-resistant watches are humidity-protected. This means that they can endure a few water splashes from washing your hands or being caught in the rain, but they’re not fully submersible. Therefore, you should not swim or shower with your watch on.

Waterproof Watches

If you’re a frequent traveler to the great outdoors, then you know how important waterproof accessories are. These types of watches are more likely to be impenetrable by water. Whether you like to hike or bike, you’ll need a watch that lets you partake in rigorous outdoor activities.

It is important to note that even the best water-resistant and waterproof watches are susceptible to degradation over time. One drop of water inside the watch can do major damage. When in doubt, always err on the side of caution when it comes to your watch and moisture. It’s best to take necessary precautions and keep up with regular maintenance so that your watch stays in good condition.

Can You Swim with a Water-Resistant Watch?

It’s strongly advised that you don’t swim or shower with your watch on. Even if your watch says it has a water resistance of up to 100 meters, you should still avoid things like diving in a pool. Flooding and water damage are the most common causes of failure in wristwatches and it is easily avoidable. Otherwise, fixing water damage can be a costly repair.

Additionally, all watches have a limit to how much pressure they can withstand. Water-resistance refers to how much pressure the watch can handle and it’s typically measured in atmospheres (ATM), bars, meters, or feet. 1 atmosphere is equal to about 1- meters or roughly 30 feet. The moment you hit the water to dive, there is an immediate shift in pressure, which can force the watch to go above its recommended water resistance level.
