A GUIDE TO JEWELRY METALS

Gold

Pure gold is a soft precious metal resistant to rust, tarnish and corrosion. Because it is extremely malleable, it is alloyed with other metals like silver, nickel, zinc or copper to make it stronger and more durable. The ratio of pure gold to other metals is measured in karats (k); 24k gold jewelry is 100 percent pure gold. Found naturally in yellow, the color of gold jewelry depends on the types and proportions of other metals used when alloyed.

Sterling Silver

Pure silver is an extremely soft precious metal. To create a strong alloy for use in jewelry, 92.5 percent pure silver is mixed with 7.5 percent of another metal, usually copper. This durable alloy is called sterling silver.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a durable steel alloy made of chromium (at least 10.5 percent) and another metal. It is resistant to bending, breaking, tarnish, corrosion and rust. It is also hypoallergenic, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin.

Platinum

The strongest of precious metals used in jewelry making, platinum is quite rare. Highly durable and dense, its color will never fade or alter. Most platinum jewelry is made of approximately 95 percent pure platinum.

YellOra

YellOra is a precious metal alloy that consists of 24-karat gold, sterling silver, palladium and proprietary metals. It offers the color and durability of traditional gold, plus it is tarnish-resistant and hypoallergenic.

Platina 4

Platina 4 blends silver, palladium, platinum and gold for a metal that is both durable and beautiful.

Platinaire

Platinaire is a metal alloy that consists primarily of silver with some platinum and complementary metals. It is made from 97.5 percent recycled materials, is hypoallergenic and is nearly impervious to tarnish.

Titanium

Titanium, the hardest natural metal in the world, is very strong and lightweight. Pure titanium is hypoallergenic, making it perfect for those with sensitive skin.

Tungsten Carbide

Tungsten carbide, an alloy made of 80 percent tungsten and 20 percent carbon alloyed with other metals, is extremely strong and has a high melting point. It is virtually scratch-resistant and tarnish-resistant. In addition, it is hypoallergenic.

Jewelry Guide & Glossary

Are these diamond earrings certified?

No. These earrings contain less than 1/10th of a carat of diamonds. Diamonds this small in size and quantity are not generally certified.

Is the carat measurement per earring or per pair?

The carat measurement refers to the total carat weight, which would include the total weight of all diamonds in both stud earrings.

Can you wear these sterling silver earrings constantly and they won't turn your ears green?

It depends on the wearer's body and how well they take care of the studs. The green skin effect comes from a chemical reaction between the wearer's skin and copper that is alloyed within the sterling silver. This reaction does not happen to everyone, and appears more common among people with higher skin acidity. These studs are plated with rhodium. As long as the rhodium plating is maintained, the wearer's skin won't come in contact with the sterling silver and shouldn't turn green.

Is the silver nickel free on these stud earrings?

Sterling silver is usually nickel free, but not always. Nickel is sometimes used as one of the non silver materials used in making sterling silver. Each manufacturer has their own alloy.

Are the backings on these earrings made of copper?

As with the setting and post, the backings are made of sterling silver.
