How Good is a Rowing Machine Workout?

Do you have 20 minutes to spare? Using a rowing machine is one of the most efficient ways to get a cardiovascular and strength training workout in a short amount of time. It mimics what it feels like to row a boat, so you get the same resistance of water on a machine. Gliders are low-impact exercise tools that help you burn calories and build muscles because all of your muscles are used to perform the movement. You’ll be able to feel these movements in your upper body, legs, and glutes.

How to Use a Row Machine

The rowing technique is a fluid motion that initiates the stroke with the legs, engages the back and core, and finishes with the arms. There are four steps to help you learn how to make the perfect rowing stroke. Every stroke is composed of two phases: the Drive and the Recovery; and two positions: the Catch and the Finish. Here’s how it’s done:

  • The Catch - Keep your arms straight and head neutral with level shoulders. Lean your upper body forward and keep your knees bent.
  • The Drive - Press your legs against the footboard until they’re straight. Lean back and pull your arms towards your chest while keeping your back straight and core engaged.
  • The Finish - Your legs should be straight in this position with your upper body leaning slightly back. The handle is held lightly below your ribs and the shoulder blades are pulled back together.
  • The Recovery - Go through the same exact movement as the Drive but in reverse. Once your hands have cleared your knees, allow your knees to bend and gradually slide the seat forward.
