Picking the Right Height for Your Bar Stool

There’s nothing worse than a bar stool that’s too tall or too short. Not only is this uncomfortable but it will look disproportionate as well. When it comes to finding a bar stool or counter stool for your kitchen, you’ll first want to find your counter height. You can do this by measuring from the top of your counter down to the floor. The goal is for your bar stool set to seamlessly fit under the bar in your kitchen. Choose bar stools that let you sit at countertop height or something lower to accommodate a regular kitchen table.

Here are the three most common bar stool heights to consider:

  • Counter Stools: The standard height of kitchen counters and islands is between 35 and 39 inches, so be sure to choose counter stools between 24 and 27 inches.
  • Bar Stools: If your counter is between 40 and 43 inches, you’ll find that bar stools between 28 and 33 inches are your best bet. This is a height similar to stools found in restaurants and bars.
  • Spectators Stools: If your counter is 44 inches or higher, then extra tall stools between 34 and 36 inches are a great option for viewing parties and everyday use.
