The History, Features, & Benefits of Polyester Blankets
Polyester is found in items all around us, from clothing to furniture, and even in car tires and in the finishes of yachts and musical instruments! Polyester is made from two separate petroleum products: terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol - whew, say that three times fast!
When the two chemicals are combined at high heat, they form a chemical called a polymer. The polymer then cools and becomes a syrup-like substance. The substance is then put through tiny holes, begins to harden, and comes out of the holes in the shapes of strings. These strings are then used to create a wide range of products, including blankets!
One of the primary benefits of a blanket primarily made of polyester is that it can be washed and dried many times. And even after many washings, it will still retain its shape and color. Polyester blankets also offer the added benefit of being stain resistant. So even if your young ones spill something on the blanket, a wash and dry should do the trick to remove any debris!
Caring for Your Polyester Blanket
Speaking of washing and drying your blanket, here are some tips to keep in mind when caring for your blanket. Following these tips can ensure a long life for your polyester blanket!
Tips for washing:
- Wash it in warm water that’s less than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Use a mild detergent
- Do not use bleach or fabric softener
- Do not wash with other textiles or fabrics
Tips for drying:
- Tumble dry on the lowest possible heat setting
- Just like washing, do not dry with other textiles or fabrics
- Remove the blanket from the dryer immediately after the cycle is complete to prevent wrinkles
